Edmund Avery stops in Winslow Arizona in a classic T-Bird

A stunning car, a smiling guy in a super cool hat, and a dog wearing a hip striped sweater stop on a corner in Winslow Arizona… why? Because the three-year-old Shih-Tzu had never toured the Mother Road even though his name–Edmund Avery–embodies two important Route 66 icons: Edmund for the Route 66 town of Edmund Oklahoma, and Avery for Cyrus Stevens Avery, the father of Route 66. Feeling it was time Edmund Avery understood the meaning behind his name, his pal Jim packed the pup into a newly acquired 1955 T-Bird and set off for an adventure toward their home in Cassville Missouri, stopping at legendary sites along the way.

Jim’s Story

One day in the early 2000s, a customer at Jim Michalec’s Route 66 Gas & Kicks in Bruce Wisconsin asked if he’d ever traveled Route 66. Jim had not. That simple question set him on a quest. In 2003, he traveled the full length of Route 66 in a 1966 Rambler Station Wagon, stirring an unwavering love for the Mother Road that inspired him to publish the Route 66 Advertiser. Over the years working on the paper, he traveled the route many more times in a variety of 1966 cars including an Olds 98, a 1966 Mustang, and a 1966 Corvair, all with co-pilot Barbara-Anne, his first Shih-tzu. Now, it’s Edmund Avery’s turn to explore the Mother Road with Jim and his fantastic choice of cars.
